What does “struck off the register” mean?
Being struck off (the regulator calls this "erasure") removes the practitioner from the register. They are no longer permitted to practise this profession in the UK. Erasure can be reviewed after a minimum of five years, but is otherwise indefinite.

The NMC's Fitness to Practise Committee reviewed a 12-month suspension order on nurse Nimmy George and decided to replace it with a striking-off order, taking effect at the end of 25 September 2026. The panel found her fitness to practise remains impaired by lack of competence and misconduct. It received no new evidence of insight or steps to strengthen her practice, and noted she has not engaged with the NMC since at least August 2024.
Charges
The charges found proved which resulted in the substantive order were that, between 20 December 2021 and 12 September 2022, Ms George failed to demonstrate the standards of knowledge, skill and judgement required to practise without supervision as a Band 5 nurse. The 19 lack of competence charges covered moving and handling, record keeping, communication with patients and colleagues, patient observations and escalation, infection control, and the preparation, checking and administration of medication. Three misconduct charges were also found proved: behaving in an unprofessional and/or inappropriate manner by stating to a named colleague words to the effect of 'I could kill someone here and I would still get a job at home' and a remark about disposing of her passport and visa; claiming around January 2022 that two named colleagues had told her they would clean the commode and/or bathroom when she knew that they had not; and that those actions lacked integrity in that she was attempting to blame those colleagues for not cleaning the commode and/or bathroom knowing that it was her responsibility.
Findings
This was the second review of a 12-month suspension order imposed on 28 August 2024 and continued for a further 12 months on 5 August 2025. The panel found that Ms George's fitness to practise remains impaired by reason of both her lack of competence and her misconduct, on public protection and public interest grounds. It received no new evidence of insight, no evidence of relevant training or steps to strengthen her practice, and determined she remains liable to repeat matters of the kind found proved. The panel took into account that Ms George has not engaged with the NMC since at least August 2024, so a conditions of practice order would not be workable, and concluded that a further period of suspension would serve no useful purpose. It was not able to impose a striking-off order in respect of the lack of competence because the two year period of suspension has not yet elapsed, so it imposed the striking-off order in respect of the misconduct. The order takes effect at the end of 25 September 2026 in accordance with Article 30(1).
