Nursing and Midwifery Council determination — review hearing
Struck off the register
The regulator’s term: erasure
What does “struck off the register” mean?
Being struck off (the regulator calls this "erasure") removes the practitioner from the register. They are no longer permitted to practise this profession in the UK. Erasure can be reviewed after a minimum of five years, but is otherwise indefinite.
Concerning Dorothy Onwuteaka, nurse (Nursing and Midwifery Council 19K0631O).
Decision date: 3 February 2026 · Hearing started 3 February 2026
In plain English
The NMC's Fitness to Practise Committee reviewed an existing suspension order on Dorothy Onwuteaka and found that her fitness to practise remained impaired. No evidence of insight or practice improvement had been provided despite guidance from multiple previous review panels. The panel determined that a striking-off order was the only sanction adequate to protect the public, to take effect on 12 March 2026 when the existing suspension expired.
Charges
The review hearing concerned a suspension order imposed for lack of competence relating to wide-ranging clinical practice concerns arising from incidents between November 2019 and April 2021.
Findings
The panel found that Dorothy Onwuteaka's fitness to practise remained impaired. There was no evidence of strengthening her practice or improving insight despite clear steer from previous reviewing panels. The panel found that a further suspension order would serve no useful purpose and that a striking-off order was the only sanction adequate to protect the public. The striking-off order was to take effect on expiry of the current suspension order on 12 March 2026 in accordance with Article 30(1).
